More Hilton Head

Since I know that not everyone in the world has had the opportunity to go to Hilton Head, I wanted to attempt to give you a taste of what Hilton Head is "like."  So here are a few pictures to illustrate.

I think the most descriptive word for the Island is "green."  There are trees everywhere, especially coniferous trees.  The first year we went, we walked around our resort and picked up giant pine cones to take back as souvenirs.

Instead of grass, it is mostly beds of pine needles.

Also worth noting: Hilton Head is a swamp.  So yes, there are lots of mosquitoes.  Also, alligators, lizards, and snakes.  But its a pretty beautiful swamp!

Hilton Head makes people smile :)  How can you not be happy at a beach like that?

This is low tide, looking toward the shore at some houses.  That "river" is a tide pool that is always there at low tide.  Sometime you can find crabs in there.  Most of the time, it's just crab poop.

Pretty much all of the coastline is developed with houses and conduminiums.

Most of the days we were there the waves left something to be desired, but Wednesday there was a storm out at seam, so we had lots of fun playing in waves that were over Tim and Mandy's heads.

These are the dunes... this sand is dry even when it is high tide.

Between these dune grasses and the trees is swamp.  So this pictures kind of shows you all of Hilton Head's habitats.

To give you some idea of what the developed areas are like (which really is most of the island) these are pictures of Shelter Cove... it is between the island and main land.  This is where people keep thier yachts, so it is one of the more upscale areas.  (We did not stay here).

Like I said, the island is very developed, but still very beautiful.  There are restaurants, stores, and traffic EVERYWHERE, but they do a great job of keeping the residential areas quiet so it is still very relaxing.

Its a pretty great place!  If you are looking for a vacation spot, I highly recommend it.  It was definitely worth the two day drive it took us to get there.
