soggy

Well kids...its time for another episode of Real Life with the Taylors.

Junk piling up in the dining room to get it out of the basement.  Doggie camp always wears these kids out.
In today's episode, we will talk about water in the basement...the awesome welcome home we got after a weekend of weddingness.

This is a hot mess... because the basement is a mess, and Tim is hot.
Our part of the country has been getting a bit of moisture lately, and the soil wanted to share the love... with the basements of 70-80% of the homes in our town.  Needless to say, Menards is selling shop-vacs like hotcakes.  Fortunately, we already had one.  Unfortunately, we didn't get home until the day after the sogginess occurred   Fortunately, most of it had drained when we got home.  Also fortunately, dogburts were still at "camp" until we picked them up after work today, so we had yesterday evening without them to make some headway on the wet mess.

Drying out the furniture and carpet.
Fortunate sidenote: Toby got his teeth cleaned whilst at "camp" AND (super-fortunate side-note) it really didn't cost that much!  As in if-we-had-known-it-only-cost-that-much-we-would-have-done-it-a-long-time-ago cheap.

This is was the back room of the basement, aka the junk room.  Please don't judge... we only have 2 drawers in our kitchen, so we can't really have a junk drawer.  This is how we cope.
Lessons learned through this watery extravaganza:

  • Don't hoard junk.
  • If you must hoard junk, don't keep it in cardboard boxes.
  • If you must hoard junk in cardboard boxes, don't put them on your basement floor.
  • Buy a de-humidifier, shop vac, and fans BEFORE disaster strikes.(we won on this one)
  • Remove heavy rolls of carpet from your basement before they become waterlogged.  Better yet...
  • Don't hoard rolls of carpet in your basement.
  • Have I mentioned the beauty of simplicity and limited possessions?
  • There's nothing like a rainy day to motivate you to get started on those projects you've been meaning to get to.  Like cleaning the basement.  And ripping up the basement floor and replacing it (aka, pouring thousands of dollars into a hole in the ground).

It appears that the water got up to about 4 inches in parts.  Yes, those parts were in the aformentioned junk room.  Of course we have the most water where we have the most junk.

If you're feeling bad for us right now... don't.  That's silly.  Its really not a big deal.  Others are much MUCH worse off.

But can someone please tell me this will dry out someday?

Tico's right back in the saddle already, relaxing in Jynx's cage.
I love you guys.  Its good to be talking to you  blogging again.  Thanks for reading.

  1. Steph, This is all very interesting and I do feel sorry for you~~we can relate on the junk part as we were cleaning out our garage today~~but I have to admit I was a little disappointed there wasn't really any wedding news. Next time, right? Love ya, Aunt Lynette p.s. - It's late so I'm on my way to bed, a little tired and a little grumpy :(

  2. I wish I was there to help and lend some experience from our various soggy experiences. It does sound like you have the right plan of attack. Get EVERYTHING that was wet OUT. Dehumidifiers are great but they will not dry out anything that holds or absorbs water. Also start collecting large plastic tubs. They keep things tidy and out of waters way. They also stack so you can keep more stuff!!!
